Stop Treating Every Slow Season Like an Emergency

Can I tell you something I wish someone had told me years ago?

Not every slow season is a sign that something is wrong.

I know that's hard to believe when you're refreshing Shopify every ten minutes, watching your sales dashboard like it's somehow going to change because you looked at it again. (Trust me, I've been there.)

One slower week can convince you your marketing isn't working anymore.

One slower month can make you question your pricing, your products, your business model, and honestly...your ability to run a business at all.

It's amazing how quickly our minds can spiral.

Before long we're thinking maybe we should stop spending money on marketing. Maybe we should cancel that software. Maybe we should stop sending emails because "they're obviously not working."

And before we know it, we're pulling back on all the very things that were creating momentum in the first place.

I've watched so many business owners do this.

I've been tempted to do it myself.

But here's what I've learned after years of running an agency and working with businesses in all kinds of industries:

The businesses that survive and eventually scale aren't the ones that never experience slow seasons. They're the ones that understand what slow seasons are actually for.

Business Is More Like Farming Than Amazon Prime

I think one of the biggest lies social media has sold us is that business should have immediate results.

Post today.

Sell tomorrow.

Launch on Monday.

Six figures by Friday.

That's just...not how most healthy businesses grow.

Almost everything you do in your business has a delayed return.

Think about your email list.

Someone joins today.

Maybe they don't buy next week.

Maybe they don't buy next month.

Then one random Tuesday, eight months later, they become your best customer.

Did your email strategy suddenly start working that day?

No.

It started working the day they trusted you enough to hand over their email address.

The sale was just delayed.

The same thing happens with content.

I can't tell you how many discovery calls we've had where someone says, "I've been following you for over a year."

Over a year.

Meanwhile, if I had looked at my analytics six months earlier, I might have convinced myself nobody was paying attention.

They were.

They just weren't ready yet.

Summer Isn't the Time to Disappear

This is something I see every single year with retailers.

Summer hits.

Sales soften a little.

Immediately people start saying,

"I'm just going to wait until fall to really market."

I understand the thought process.

But I think it's backwards.

The people buying from you during Black Friday aren't magically discovering your business in November.

They're meeting you now.

They're finding your Instagram today.

They're joining your email list this month.

They're slowly building trust over the next few months until one day they're ready to buy.

Many of your Q4 customers are first hearing about you during Q2 and Q3.

So when you disappear during the summer because sales feel slower...

...you're also disappearing from the people who would have become your holiday customers.

So What Should You Actually Be Doing?

If business feels slower right now, I wouldn't spend my energy panicking.

I'd spend it building.

This is when I would finally clean up that welcome email sequence I've been putting off.

I'd make sure my abandoned cart emails are actually working.

I'd create content I've been too busy to make.

I'd ask happy customers for reviews.

I'd network.

I'd collaborate.

I'd look for ways to grow my email list.

Notice that almost none of those things create instant revenue.

That's the point.

You're planting.

Because business is almost never about what you did this morning.

It's about what you've consistently been doing for the last six months.

Don't Confuse Adjusting With Quitting

Now, let me be clear.

I'm not saying you should ignore your numbers.

Sometimes strategies do need to change.

Sometimes offers need to evolve.

Sometimes ads really aren't performing.

Good business owners absolutely evaluate what's working.

But there's a difference between making a strategic adjustment and making a fear-based decision.

A strategic adjustment says,

"How can we make this better?"

Fear says,

"Forget it. Stop everything."

Those are two completely different conversations.

One is leadership.

The other is panic.

Here's What I Hope You Remember

If your business feels slower right now, don't waste this season wishing it away.

Use it.

This is where foundations get built.

This is where systems get improved.

This is where relationships deepen.

This is where audiences grow.

This is where businesses quietly become stronger while everyone else is waiting for things to "pick back up."

One of my favorite ways to think about it is this:

Most business owners stop watering the seeds because they don't see fruit fast enough.

But some seeds were never supposed to bloom this season.

Your job isn't to dig them up every week to see if they're growing.

Your job is to keep watering them.

Eventually, the harvest comes.

And when it does, it usually looks like overnight success to everyone else.

You'll know it wasn't overnight at all.
